Sometimes, the best things happen when you least expect them. That’s exactly how it went for Brucey, a shelter dog with a bit of a rough past, and an ice cream truck driver who met him during a break. The chance encounter turned out to be the beginning of a new chapter for Brucey, who’s now finally found his forever home after several unsuccessful adoptions.
SPCA Florida, a shelter near Lakeland, shared the touching story on Facebook, saying it was “love at first sight” for the driver and Brucey. The 4-year-old pit bull had been surrendered by his previous owner in June 2022 and had been adopted and returned to the shelter a surprising six times since then. His outgoing personality and love for water made him popular, but his picky behaviors posed challenges for adopters who didn’t quite follow the shelter’s advice on his care. At one point, Brucey was even transferred to a different shelter, in hopes of finding him the right home.
But the right person came along when SPCA Florida held a staff celebration in mid-October and invited food vendors, including an ice cream truck. During her break, the driver went over to meet some of the dogs, and when she spotted Brucey, sparks flew. The rest, as they say, is history.
