MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. ( WHNT ) — A Florida doctor’s medical license has been suspended by the State of Alabama after he allegedly removed a patient’s liver instead of the spleen, ultimately causing the patient to die.
Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky, a surgeon at Sacred Heart Hospital in Fort Walton, Florida, got his medical license suspended on Wednesday.
Trial set for ex-Gurley police officer charged with manslaughter
Bill and Beverly Bryan, of Muscle Shoals , were vacationing in Destin, Florida, when he went to the hospital for pain on his left side.
In September of 2024, Joe Zarzuar, the Bryan family’s defense attorney, told News 19 that Bryan had something going on with his spleen.
“There was some sort of growth on his spleen that required some type of addressing. They were worried that the growth would cause some type of impact to the spleen,” Zarzaur said.
The Bryans were told he needed immediate surgery to remove his spleen. He died in surgery that day.
