Officials urge public to check garbage/recycling bins after”close call” at Outagamie County Recycling

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials in Outagamie County are reporting that they had a “close call” at a recycling plant due to a lithium-ion battery not being disposed of properly.

According to a social media post from Outagamie County Recycling and Solid Waste , a lithium-ion battery, possibly from an E-bike, caught on fire out on the facility’s tip floor.

Officials say they had a quick response from their team on-site and a water tanker that had the fire extinguished in under three minutes.

They add that lithium-ion batteries are a serious fire risk and they should never be placed directly into anyone’s recycling or garbage.

Instead of throwing out lithium-ion batteries, officials suggest that people take them to designated drop-off sites like the Outagamie Resource Recovery Park as a way to keep everyone safe and prevent future fires.
