‘I got guns, I sure do’: Indy man convicted of federal charges for illegal possession of firearms

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indy man faces a federal prison sentence of up to 15 years after being convicted of illegally possessing firearms.

According to a Department of Justice release, 57-year-old Salam Abdul Ali was convicted by a federal jury after being found guilty of having illegal firearms in his possession. Ali was a previously convicted felon.

Court documents show that officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded on Jan. 28, 2024, to the residence in response to a domestic disturbance report. The release did not provide the street address.

The DOJ said officers arrived and spoke with a woman who told them she resided at the home with her children and that her ex-boyfriend, who was identified as Ali, reportedly threatened to shoot and kill her, her children and her brother.

A month later, investigators executed a search warrant at Ali’s residence where they found five firearms, ammunition and firearm accessories.

Ali was present during the search and reportedly told police, “I got guns, I sure do.”
