At Least McCarthy’s Being Honest On Failed Running Back Plan

One of the biggest areas of concern for the Dallas Cowboys entering the 2024 season was the run game, and through the first eight games, those concerns have been validated.

With Rico Dowdle, Ezekiel Elliott and now Dalvin Cook, Dallas has the NFL’s worst rushing attack, averaging just 74.1 yards per game. Let’s not forget that the construction of the running back room was part of the plan in the preseason with an eye towards 2025.

But it appears that head coach Mike McCarthy isn’t completely sold on the idea of the running back by committee approach.

“It’s a challenge to get multiple guys reps,” McCarthy said. “Running back by committee is not the preference, but we feel it’s the best way to utilize these guys. We didn’t have enough trips to the plate [vs. 49ers] as a whole.”

With so many conspiracy theories surrounding Dowdle’s late withdrawal from the San Francisco 49ers game , it was the Cook and Elliott show. Aside from Zeke’s touchdown in the first quarter, there wasn’t much to get excited about, as the Cowboys registered just 56 rushing yards.
