COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — Issue 1 is a lengthy amendment that will decide how congressional districts are drawn in Ohio; the issue has elected officials who will be affected the most weighing in on both sides.
A “yes” vote for Issue 1 will establish a citizen committee to draw the maps; a “no” vote means to keep the redistricting system the way it is, as put in place by voters in 2015.
Who’s funding the groups for and against Ohio Issue 1?
Not only are there disagreements between the business community , top party officials , and voters, but also between Black leaders and lawmakers.
“This is a warning to Ohio voters,” Ohio Sen. Michele Reynolds (R-Canal Winchester) said. “Be careful what you vote for.”
“We cannot allow this injustice to continue any longer,” Ohio Sen. Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus) said. “I will be voting yes on issue 1 to ban gerrymandering and safeguard a representative legislature because the future of our state depends on it.”
Issue 1 is a constitutional amendment to change the way Ohio’s legislative district maps are drawn. The current commission is made up of all elected officials, and a majority of the members on the current commission rely on the maps they draw for their own re-election.
