U.S. Supreme Court rejects Richard Moore’s request for a stay of execution

The U.S. Supreme Court denied Richard Moore’s request for a stay in his execution, one day before his scheduled execution.

Justice 360, a Columbia-based law firm, filed an emergency application for a stay of his execution. The group had hoped the high court would review a South Carolina Supreme Court’s denial of a habeas corpus petition.

Moore is set to be executed Friday evening at the Broad River Correctional Facility in Columbia.

With the high court’s denial, Gov. Henry McMaster becomes Moore’s last option for stopping the execution.

On Wednesday, Justice 360 sent an application letter along with a video and petition asking McMaster to grant clemency. The files included testimony from Moore’s two children, the former director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections, a former South Carolina Supreme Court justice, and a former Circuit Court Judge.

Two jurors of Moore’s murder trial also signed the petition for clemency.
