Early voting in Vanderburgh so far is already twice last year’s turnout

EVANSVILLE — The number of people voting early in Vanderburgh County may already be twice the number who voted in last year’s race for mayor of Evansville.

Elections officials on Wednesday could provide only the number of voters who had cast ballots early as of day’s end Tuesday. The total of 32,308 — most of them voting in-person at public libraries — includes a daily high of roughly 3,000 who voted Tuesday. Elections officials say the daily total has exceeded 2,000 for the past several days.

At that rate, the number likely would approach 36,000 at day’s end Wednesday. In all, 18,001 people voted in the 2023 Evansville mayoral election that saw Democrat Stephanie Terry defeat Republican Natalie Rascher. It’s not a perfect comparison, given that this year’s election is open to voters countywide — but the comparison is still eye-opening.

County Clerk Marsha Abell Barnhart, Vanderburgh’s chief elections officer, said the turnout of early voters just keeps building steam.
