Beyond the Barometer: A look back at past weather on Election Day

MADISON, Wis. — Held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November, the weather on Election Day has ranged from high temperatures in the mid 70s, to over a half a foot of snow.

With another round of rain and possible thunderstorms expected for Election Day 2024, your First Warn Weather team looked back at data collected from the National Weather Service forecast office for Milwaukee to see how often it rains on Election Day versus how often it snows, and is it typically warm when Wisconsinites cast their vote or is it cooler?

Election Day 2024

With a forecast high of 64° for Election Day 2024, the 2024 forecast is trending warmer than the 155-year average high temperature of 50°. If Madison does climb to 64°, 2024 will tie 1870 for the 7th warmest high temperature recorded on Election Day.

The Hottest Election Days

The hottest temperature recorded on Election Day was back on November 3rd, 1964, when temperatures climbed into the low 70s. Madison recorded a high temperature of 76° while Milwaukee recorded a high temperature of 74°F. Election Day 1964 is also their hottest Election Day on record too. Including 1964, 70° temperatures have only been recorded four times: 1964, 1987, 2008, and 2015. 1987, 2008 and 2015 all recorded a high temperature of 72°.
