Daviess County inmates donate pumpkins to West Louisville Elementary

OWENSBORO, Ky.(WEHT) — This Halloween, 50 third graders at West Louisville Elementary got pumpkins for a special project. The pumpkins were a gift from the Daviess County Detention Center, and they were grown by inmates.

Officials say they’ve harvested thousands of pumpkins each year, since 2015.

Each pumpkin, at the elementary school, was painted to bring characters from students’ pourquoi tales to life. A pourquoi tale is a fictional story that explains why something is the way it is. For example, why snakes have no legs.

Peyton Mitchell’s story explains why wood frogs freeze in the winter.

“It’s confusing, because you’re just like ‘oh, I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what to write’.
You usually don’t get chances like this to do things like this. This was a gift that Mrs. Osbourne gave us. It’s special,” says Mitchell, a 3rd grade student.

The inmates spent 3 months growing the pumpkins.
