Chicago School Board of Education President Resigns, Mayor Johnson Releases Statement

Rev. Mitchell L. Johnson has resigned as the President of the Chicago Board of Education just one week after being sworn in.

Johnson was under fire for controversial social media posts and comments; Community members questioned why the Reverend was Mayor Brandon Johnson’s choice.

On Thursday, Brandon Johnson released a statement saying that Rev. Mitchell’s comments were hurtful and deeply disturbing.

“I asked Chicago School Board of Education (BOE) President Reverend Mitchell Johnson for his resignation, and he resigned, effective immediately. Reverend Mitchell Johnson’s statements were not only hurtful but deeply disturbing. I want to be clear: antisemitic, misogynistic, and conspiratorial statements are unacceptable,” he said.

Mayor Johnson also reassured the public that his administration would work quickly to fill the vacancy with a qualified individual who shares their commitment to “educational excellence and the values they hold dear.”

In an Oct. 24 press release, the former Chicago Board of Education President thanked the Mayor and expressed his alignment with the Johnson administration’s vision for city schools.
