This weekend is the end of daylight saving time, which means the clock falls back an hour.
First responders are encouraging everyone to check the batteries in their smoke detectors as most smoke detectors last 10 years.

A detector should be placed in every bedroom and on every floor of your home.
City of Erie Fire Marshall Don Sauer recommends testing the alarms once a month. He added if the alarm uses a 9-volt battery, it’s best to replace it when you change the clocks.

Sauer says people should also use caution with space heaters as the temperature cools.
“Make sure you use those according to the manufacturer’s recommendation. Don’t use them too close to a chair, a couch, a bed or anything that’s flammable. Make sure you always place those into a receptacle and not an extension cord or power strip or anything like that,” Sauer explained.
He went on to advise the public not to forget to check their carbon monoxide detectors as well.
