Matt Lubick ready to coach against Colorado State with Nevada after cancer battle

Matt Lubick’s first day of chemotherapy saw him walk more than 51,000 steps as he completed the 26.2 miles of a marathon in a hospital hallway.

Lubick was diagnosed with leukemia just over a year ago in early October of 2023.

He had run the Boston Marathon the prior April but was diagnosed after a doctor visit revealed a low white blood cell count.

That led to the start of chemotherapy and doing the walking marathon while attached to an IV.

A little more than a year later, Lubick, the son of legendary Colorado State football coach Sonny Lubick, will coach against the Rams this weekend.

Matt Lubick is the offensive coordinator under new coach Jeff Choate and has helped transform the Wolf Pack and QB Brendon Lewis into a dangerous attack.

CSU and Nevada play at 6 p.m. Mountain time Saturday, Nov. 2 . The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

Lubick’s ongoing battle was documented last week with a feature on Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff show.

“I really believe this is the best story in college football this year because it’s authentic. It’s real,” Choate said on Fox.
