The Louisville Cardinals upset the No. 11-ranked Clemson Tigers 33-21 on Saturday night. It marked the first win in series history for Louisville, who entered the Week 10 contest as 11.5-point road underdogs. They’re now 1-8 all-time against the Tigers.
With six minutes remaining in the game and trailing 26-14, Clemson attempted an onside kick that was recovered by Louisville. Replay review confirmed the call on the field, despite fans believing Dabo Swinney’s team had actually recovered the ball.
Seconds after the referee’s announcement, fans at Memorial Stadium began to rain down dozens of bottles and other trash on to the field of play.
“They just let the call stand and that unfortunately has now drawn the ire of the crowd and now we’ve got the crowd acting in a completely inappropriate way as now a lot of debris is being thrown on the field,” the ESPN broadcast said.
The Clemson cheerleaders, who were situated in the back of the end zone, were also involved in the dangerous incident.
