Washington D.C. Man Pleads Guilty to Kidnapping, Robbery, and Carjacking

David Zanders, 22, of Washington D.C., pleaded guilty on Nov. 1 to charges related to a May 2022 kidnapping and robbery outside a nightclub, as well as a carjacking that same day, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Columbia announced.

According to court documents, on May 1, 2022, Zanders and another suspect reportedly kidnapped two men outside a nightclub on the 600 block of Florida Avenue, NW.

The suspects claimed to be working for Uber, leading the victims to enter Zanders’ vehicle.

Soon after, Zanders reportedly pulled onto a residential street in Washington, D.C., aimed a firearm at the victims, and robbed them of their phones and money.

The department states that the suspects then drove the victims to multiple commercial locations, reportedly attempting to withdraw cash from ATMs using the victims’ credit cards.

At a gas station in Washington, D.C., one victim managed to escape while Zanders and his accomplice were searching for an ATM, the department reported.

The department further reports that Zanders and the other suspect subsequently transported the second victim to a supermarket in Maryland, where they reportedly withdrew money using his ATM card before releasing him at another location in Maryland.
