Multi-million dollar mega grant to fix chronically congested California freeway

Yesterday, U.S. Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Mark DeSaulnier joined regional officials to announce over $166 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for the Contra Costa Transportation Authority’s (CCTA) INNOVATE 680 project. The funds, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Mega Grant program, represent California’s largest transportation award for 2024.

The investment will address congestion along I-680, including filling express lane gaps and constructing new ramp systems in Walnut Creek. CCTA estimates that the improvements will create 3,500 jobs per year and enhance mobility, safety, and economic activity in the Bay Area.

“Upgrading I-680 will truly improve our quality of life,” said CCTA Chair Newell Arnerich.
