All-Star reliever with declined club option could be possible trade target for Red Sox

The Milwaukee Brewers have declined their club option for reliever Devin Williams, per Jeff Passan , and the Boston Red Sox could go after him in a trade this winter.

According to Passan, the Brewers declined Devin Williams’ club option for $10.5 million, opting to pay his final year before arbitration, which will be $8-9 million. Williams will also receive $250,000 dollars as a buyout.

This season, Williams was dominant. He had a 1.25 ERA, 14 saves, and 38 strikeouts in 22 games. Williams was dealing with stress fractures in his back, which led to his limited appearances. The five-year veteran is a two-time All-Star, and the 2020 NL Rookie of the Year.

With the Sox losing key parts of their bullpen which was already one of the worst in the league, Williams would be a great pickup in a trade. The Sox have echoed a win now mentality, so with their stacked farm they could trade some prospects for Williams, who would be a valuable arm in the bullpen.

The Sox have the money and the prospects, so they should have a great offseason this winter, and here’s hoping they do.
