Mom’s Autism, ADHD Diagnosis Follows Son’s

At age 37, I was diagnosed with ADHD and autism. It wasn’t until I took my son for an evaluation that I realized I was also neurodivergent.

Despite my apparent organization, I spent countless hours planning my day and running through to-do lists in my head. I was diagnosed with autism and ADHD, conditions that often coexist.

My psychiatrist explained that my hyperactivity manifested internally, leading to impulsive decisions and frequent interruptions. I also realized that my routines and sensory sensitivities were part of my autism diagnosis.

Initially, I struggled to accept my diagnosis. However, my doctor emphasized that women like me often have linguistic and communication skills that mask our neurodivergence.

Since accepting my diagnosis, I’ve found a community of neurodivergent individuals. I’ve also discovered ways to improve my focus and listen better. While my son’s challenges were difficult, they led me to understand and support both of us.
