Don’t let them tell you when to laugh

“They’re not going to die for you, why are you going to let them tell you when to laugh?”

Those words were of the late Redd Foxx during one of his comedy specials. He had just told an “adult” joke and some of the audience didn’t laugh… seemingly waiting for others to laugh first.

Foxx’s words came to mind Saturday night as I was sitting in the Charleston Music Hall listening and laughing at the words of the great Lewis Black.

Much like Foxx, Black says things that are way too true for some folks and — at times — elicits a few groans rather than laughs. He spent some time Saturday night talking about just that.

I can see why staunch Conservatives or dyed-in-the-wool Liberals have a problem with the comedy of Lewis Black. He makes fun of both of them.

He repeatedly called Donald Trump “orange” and refers to Joe Biden as “the ghost of Christmas past.” And they’re just two of his targets during this, his last, comedy tour.

Both of those things — and many of the others — are funny, and the likelihood is that if you can’t laugh at them you take politics way too seriously.
