Florida Restaurant Known for Cuban Tacos Closes; Japanese Eatery Moves In

The vibrant food scene of Coral Gables bids farewell to Caja Caliente, a cherished destination known for its Cuban-Mexican fusion cuisine. Helmed by chef Mika León, Caja Caliente became famous for its innovative dishes like lechon tacos, vaca frita burritos, and spicy goat cheese croquetas. Established in 2019 as the chef’s first brick-and-mortar venture, the restaurant at 808 Ponce de Leon Blvd captured the hearts and palates of locals.

Caja Caliente’s journey began in 2016 as a food truck stationed in Wynwood. By 2017, it expanded into a larger space, complete with an outdoor dining area carved out of a parking lot. However, following the closure of the food truck in 2020, the Coral Gables spot remained the sole embodiment of the brand. Its lechon tacos garnered significant acclaim, being named the best tacos in Florida by Yelp and Eat This, Not That in 2020.

Reflecting on her decision, León expressed her commitment to preserving the essence of Caja Caliente: “I wanted to move somewhere with more walking traffic,” she said, hinting at a refreshed approach to the beloved concept. Although she’s currently involved in television projects and a cookbook, León is scouting potential locations and plans to revive Caja Caliente in 2025. “I’m in no rush,” she added. “I just want to make sure I bring it back the right way and keep the quality of what locals know and love.”
