The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has introduced state-of-the-art SC42-DM locomotives to modernize Metro-North Railroad’s fleet, enhancing train reliability while significantly cutting air pollutants. Unveiled in Croton-on-Hudson, these 4,200-horsepower locomotives will reduce emissions by over 85% compared to the older P32 models and are set to begin passenger service in early 2025.
Designed for greater efficiency, these locomotives will operate on electric power across Metro-North’s 102-mile third rail territory, a major upgrade from the current fleet’s limited electric range. Enhanced diagnostic systems will ensure smoother, more reliable operations.
“This is about delivering the best customer experience every day,” said Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi, emphasizing the environmental benefits. New York State Senator Pete Harckham hailed the emissions reduction as vital to improving air quality, while Assembly Member Dana Levenberg called it “good news” for cleaner air and dependable service.
