(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A southwest suburban high school is mourning after a 16-year-old student was one of two people killed in a weekend shooting.
Police in Summit responded to reports of shots fired late Friday night near 73rd Avenue and Hanover Street, but they found a 16-year-old boy with gunshot wounds.
A 34-year-old man, who was sitting in a nearby vehicle, had also been shot.
Both were taken to hospitals, where the man died that evening.
The teen, identified as Jaydin Bahena, was pronounced dead Saturday.
He was a student at Argo Community High School. In a statement, the school said the 11th grader was “an unnecessary victim of violence caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The school will also have social workers and counselors on hand.
His family has started a GoFundMe page to help with funeral and memorial expenses, which has already raised more than $11,000. The family wrote that “Jaydin was loved by many.”
“He was a hardworking kid, in and out of school, work and home,” Jaydin’s family wrote.
