A 39-year-old Illinois man has died while being held at the Kenosha County Jail.
The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office said the death happened Sunday in the early morning hours.
A correctional officer, at about 1:40 a.m., discovered the man unresponsive but still breathing in his cell, according to the sheriff’s office. Medical staff were called to assist, but upon their arrival, the man was no longer breathing and remained unresponsive, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office said jail staff followed “established protocols,” initiated CPR on the man, and requested medical assistance from the Kenosha Fire Department.
“Despite the ongoing life-saving efforts, which continued until approximately 2:20 a.m., the inmate was pronounced deceased,” the statement reads.
Authorities have not identified the man because next of kin has not been notified. The sheriff’s office said the Illinois man was being held at the jail since Oct. 12.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that the death is not suspicious and did not involve any use of force by correctional staff,” according to the sheriff’s office.
