Tens of thousands in Augusta will not need to go to the polls on Election Day

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Bernie Ward Community Center is set up for voting on Tuesday, but thousands in Augusta don’t have to worry about making it to the polls Election Day.

“And I went to Diamond Lakes and did the early voting maybe like the beginning of this month,” said Mae Johnson.

Augusta saw big early voting numbers.

“Thirty-four percent voted early. We had a little over 51,000 people who voted early, which is much better than we saw in 2020 – we had about 38,000 people vote early. So the numbers were definitely a lot higher,” said Elections Director Travis Doss.

Despite the big number of early votes, all of Augusta’s 68 precincts will be open Tuesday. Voters must go to their registered polling site or be redirected if they don’t.

“Know before you go that’s what I like to say look it up look at your registration know your polling place,” said Doss.

That is what Charlie Josey was doing. He made a recon trip to Bernie Ward the day before to make sure of his polling site.

“I wasn’t sure where I had to go and vote, somebody sent me the text, so I had to come and find out to make sure I knew where Bernie Ward was,” he said.
