Groups send ‘voter report card’ mailers saying they will check if you vote

Oregonians have received political mailers that Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown said contain “intimidation and threats.”

Most of the “voting report cards” come from the Center for Voter Information (CVI). The mailers list the recipients’ address and voting history in addition to the information of what is described as “your neighbors.” The neighbors’ names and house numbers are blacked out, but streets are listed. Some “neighbors” listed on letters the Statesman Journal reviewed were over two miles away from the recipient’s address.

Similar mailers have been sent by the Progressive Turnout Project, but have not sparked the same alarm around the country.

The Turnout Project mailers, however, have nearly identical wording.

Brown’s letter accused CVI and its sister organization, the Voter Participation Center, of violating Maryland law and the Voting Rights Act. Statements from the mailer such as “we will be reviewing these records after the election to determine whether or not you joined your neighbors in voting” imply that a person’s voting record will be revealed and pressures them, he said.
