NC trooper fires ‘several’ shots at Granville County chase suspect after patrol car rammed, disabled

BUTNER, N.C. (WNCN) — A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper fired several gunshots at a truck in Granville County Monday afternoon after the truck’s driver deliberately crashed twice into the trooper’s car, officials said.

The incident began just after 3:45 p.m. Monday when a trooper saw a white truck speeding on Central Avenue in Butner, according to a late Monday night news release from the NCSHP.

The trooper turned on lights and sirens and tried to stop the driver of the truck, who fled.

A chase began, continuing on Old N.C. 75 in Granville County, the news release said.

“The suspect came to an abrupt stop in the roadway and began traveling in reverse striking the patrol vehicle,” Sgt. Christopher D. Knox of the NCSHP said in the release.

The truck driver then fled, turning right onto Range Road.

“The suspect stopped again in the roadway and the member began to exit their vehicle when the suspect traveled in reverse striking the patrol car,” Knox wrote.

At that point, the trooper “fired several rounds into the back of the truck” while standing outside his patrol car, according to the news release.
