LIVE RESULTS: Guilford County casts votes for school board, including contentious District 3 race

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — It’s Election Day and the polls are open, which means that results will soon begin rolling in for some of the most highly watched races around the Triad and across the state.

Background

Of all the small races in the Piedmont Triad, one school board seat proved the most contentious. Pat Tillman’s election to the Guilford County Commissioners left his seat on the school board vacant and his term unfinished. Guilford County Republicans nominated Michael Logan to finish out the term.

Logan, a Republican and then a teacher at Southwest Guilford High School, was rejected by the board multiple times and, after taking the issue up to the state level, the board named their own candidate, Bill Goebel , who was then a Republican from the same district.

An as-of-yet-unresolved lawsuit and protracted back-and-forth ensued, ending with Goebel conceding the seat to Logan and choosing to run against Logan as an unaffiliated candidate.

Goebel and Logan ran against former Guilford County Board of Education attorney Doug Coanes, a Democrat.
