Judge calls road rage shooting ‘senseless act,’ defendant held without bond

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The defendant in a deadly road rage shooting in Hillsborough County has been ordered to be held in jail without bond until his trial.

Kentavious Gholston, 26, is accused of shooting and killing Steven Powers, 61, after the two argued in traffic on Oct. 27 on U.S. 301 near Bloomingdale Avenue.

Thomas Powers not only heard, but watched how his brother, Steven, was killed as footage of the altercation played in court Monday.

“I wish that it never happened but it did, and I’ve lost my only other brother,” Thomas said.

Detective Renee Garcia said in a video played in court, Gholston appears to cut off Steven and then slam on his brakes at least twice in front of the victim’s van.

The detective said Steven then got out of his van and swung at Gholston.

“While ducking under the victim’s swing, the defendant essentially uses his chest to push the victim down,” Garcia said. “At which point the defendant draws a firearm from his left pocket, points it at the victim and fires two shots.”
