The San Francisco Giants have an opportunity to succeed in an area in which they’ve failed the past two offseasons.
They have been unable to land star players to long-term deals, with notable misses including Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa, and Shohei Ohtani. But they could finally land somebody this winter.
Left-hander Max Fried is one of the top starters on the free agent market. MLB Trade Rumors predicted that San Francisco would be in on him.
“Atlanta will probably be involved to a point, but the years and dollars being discussed will likely quickly escalate beyond their comfort zone, given those factors. Other teams who could make a play for Fried include the Mets, Giants, Red Sox, Padres, Cubs, Orioles, Tigers, Angels and Dodgers.”
The Giants will need a starting pitcher this offseason. While they have Logan Webb, Blake Snell has opted out of his two-year, $62 million contract with the team.
San Francisco is unlikely to retain Snell, so Fried may be the next best thing for them. He made 29 starts with the Atlanta Braves this season, going 11-10 with a 3.25 ERA over 174 1/3 innings while posting a 3.5 wins above replacement.
