SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — NewsChannel 9 was given exclusive access to Governor Kathy Hochul as she got her closest look at the I-81 construction site.

The governor toured work happening at the southern interchange, where the current I-481 meets the current I-81 south of Downtown Syracuse.
This area is being transformed with the brand new roundabout built on Brighton Avenue, which eventually will be the start of Business Loop 81 headed toward the city.
Governor Hochul got meet workers assigned to the project as part of the State DOT’s “Hire Local Initiative,” a goal that 15% of the work is done by targeted groups of workers.
Every company awarded a construction contract needs to have proven to the state that it can fulfill the local hiring requirements.
