Election results: 9 vie for Ventura council seats; Measure P, Measure Q on ballot

Editor’s note: Vote centers close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, and the first round of results is expected to be released by 8:30 p.m. This story will be updated as results are released.

Nine candidates are running for three seats in the Ventura City Council race.

Incumbent Doug Halter will face challenger Naz Madaen for the District 2 seat.

Councilmember Mike Johnson, who represents District 3, declined to run again. William Cornell, Heather May Ellinger, Clint Garman, Maricela Reyes and Ryyn Schumacher will compete for the open seat.

Mayor Joe Schroeder, who represents District 7, decided not to run again. Mario “Alex” Mangone and Brian Brennan are vying for the seat. Candidate Erik Eiser told The Star he had withdrawn the race.

Two measures on the ballot, P and Q, would also allow for a boost in council members’ pay and changing requirements for filling vacant seats. A “yes” vote on Measures P and Q allows the changes. A “no” vote keeps the charter the same. Both require a simple majority or greater than 50% to pass.
