All creatures great and small: Readers share their best animal snaps – even some bugs, too

Animals of all kinds, whether on land, air and sea, were the subjects of this month’s Readers Photo Challenge.

People entered images of mammals, birds, reptiles and even insects. Some entries were of beloved pets while others were of animals in the wild. Sixty-two photos were sent in by 17 readers.

Top honors goes to Carolyn Silva from Jackson. Her photo is an example of good things happening if you’re patient enough.

Silva and her husband were having a picnic lunch at the Spud Point Marina while on a trip to Bodega Bay. On a nearby dock stood a brightly yellow crane which was vividly reflected in the water of the bay. The shimmering water made the reflection break up and create a pattern of color.

Silva said to her husband “Wouldn’t it be cool if a sea lion or bird popped up near the yellow reflection for a photo op?” Silva did see some birds and even a sea lion but they all were too far away from the reflection.

They waited for about 30 minutes and were about to leave when a cormorant popped up from beneath the water, right in the middle of the reflection. With her Nikon D7500 DSLR camera close at hand she fired off some quick shots and captured a photo of the bird surrounded by the shattered yellow of the crane and blue from the sky.
