Naturalized citizens face voting hurdles; Iowa’s list of voters to be challenged sought

Attorneys and voters filed declarations in a federal court case saying naturalized citizens with proper identification were turned away from voting Tuesday after officials challenged their citizenship.

They also alleged that county auditors and state officials refused to clarify prior to Nov. 5 which documents were needed for some of them to vote.

The attorneys are seeking by the end of business Wednesday a list of voters targeted by Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate for citizenship challenges and investigations leading up to the general election Tuesday, as well as their contact information. They also are seeking all directives, guidance, procedures or instructions provided to local election officials that pertained to Pate’s list.

The move comes after a federal judge ruled in the case just prior to the election that Iowa poll workers could challenge the ballots of 2,176 Iowans who are on a list of possible noncitizens , denying a request to order counties to allow those named to vote normally.
