Central Indiana voters cast their ballots Tuesday for their next state representatives and state senators, and several of the races show close contests as results continue to come in around the area.
Republicans have officially kept a Hamilton County Statehouse seat in House District 24 , held by outgoing state Rep. Donna Schaibley, R-Carmel. Republican Hunter Smith, a former punter for the Indianapolis Colts, defeated Democrat Josh Lowry Tuesday night with 56% of the vote to 44% of the vote.
Republicans also held onto House District 39 in Hamilton County, the seat long held by state Rep. Jerry Torr, R-Carmel, with Republican Danny Lopez beating Democrat Matt McNally 54% to 46% of the vote with 99% of the vote reported in that race.
Democratic state Rep. Victoria Garcia Wilburn claimed victory Tuesday night in her run for reelection against Republican Patricia Bratton. Garcia Wilburn had about 52% of the vote to Bratton’s 48% with 99% of votes counted at about 8 a.m. Wednesday.
