SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Chatham County precinct reporting totals on the Georgia Secretary of State website led to confusion late Tuesday when it came to the results of several local elections.
The Chatham County Board of Elections website has a section labeled “click here for live election results,” which takes users directly to the Secretary of State’s website for Chatham County.
But as the votes were counted Tuesday night, the Secretary of State’s website showed 100% of the precincts in Chatham County reporting, despite the fact that the totals only actually reflected approximately 84,000 votes that had been cast in-person at polling places across the county and not early votes.
“Today we had 40,000, a little over 40,000 come in today, on Election Day and we’re still feeding some of those into the machine to tabulate,” Chairman of the Chatham County Board of Elections Board, Thomas Mahoney, said. “We also had over 90,000 votes that the Registar took in in early voting and we’re still processing some of those. In addition, you see the ladies in the back are doing about 10,000 absentee votes…”
