Democrats win 2 of 3 battleground races in northeast Wisconsin during first election to use new maps

GREEN BAY — Democrats in greater Green Bay tripled the number of legislators it will send to Madison for the next legislative session, thanks to Wisconsin’s new legislative maps.

Previously the only local Democrat in the state Legislature hailed from Assembly District 90, whose boundaries largely followed that of the city of Green Bay. Amaad Rivera-Wagner won the district again for Democrats on Nov. 5.

Joining him will be two Green Bay Democrats, growing the number of Democrats from the area headed to Madison to three.

The figure was finalized when Democrat Christy Welch conceded the Assembly District 88 race to Republican Benjamin Franklin on Wednesday afternoon.

The races in northeast Wisconsin’s three battleground districts gave the winners a run for their money in a show of just how competitive Gov. Tony Evers’ redrawn map turned them.

These districts — Assembly Districts 88 and 89, and Senate District 30 — have largely voted for Republican representatives until the new map condensed their boundaries to go no further than the suburbs immediately surrounding the city. CNalysis , an election forecaster that specializes in predicting state legislative races, called Assembly District 89 and Senate District 30 “Leaning Democratic” and Assembly District 88 a tossup contest.
