New faces enter Delaware General Assembly following general election

DOVER — Now that the general election has passed, focus in the First State will soon pivot to the work of the 153 rd General Assembly.

The new legislative session will begin Jan. 14, 2025 under a new branch of executive leadership – Democratic Governor-elect Matt Meyer and Lt. Governor-elect Kyle Evans Gay – and several new faces in the General Assembly.

House of Representatives

Most of the change in the General Assembly will occur in the House of Representatives, with both the Democratic and Republican caucuses set to meet Friday to elect their new leadership teams, according to Joe Fulgham, a spokesperson for the House Republican caucus.

Since Democrats have expanded their majority by one seat, to a 27 to 14 advantage, they can elect the next Speaker of the House themselves, since it only requires 21 votes in the chamber.

In September, then-incumbent Speaker of the House Valerie Longhurst, D-Bear, lost her bid for reelection in the primary to Kamela Smith, who is one of the new faces in the state House.
