SALT LAKE CITY ( ABC4 ) — Utah drivers will soon have a new option for their license plate design as the new Great Salt Lake design is expected to hit the streets by January 2025.
The new plate was introduced in 2023 as a way for Utahns to directly support the preservation of the Great Salt Lake while showcasing that support on their cars.
When it was first introduced, the Great Salt Lake Preservation plate followed the standard special plate appearance with a five-character license plate serial and “Utah” written in red lettering. On the left was a sticker with a pelican flying over the lake and “Great Salt Lake” written above. The bottom center of the plate reads “Restore Preserve Protect.”
That plate has since been replaced with a full-plate artistic design featuring the familiar pelican and slogan. “Utah” is now bolded in blue at the top center of the plate with “Great Salt Lake” fixed just below. The change in design has also increased the character limit from five characters to six
