Do you live in one of the dirtiest cities in America?

While there are a few streets in each city that might not be the cleanest, the cities that made the list of the dirtiest in the country possess increased amounts of litter, air pollution, and other undesirable factors that contribute to “disease and viruses.”

According to a list compiled by Visual Capitalist , the dirtiest city in Michigan is Detroit . Detroit ranked as the second dirtiest city in America.

Other cities that made the top 10 include Newark, New Jersey, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona to name a few.

Here’s what Visual Capitalist had to say about compiling the data to discover America’s dirtiest cities:

“From poor air quality to the presence of unwanted litter and pests, living in dirty and polluted cities can have detrimental effects on quality of life. Air pollution is dangerous to our lung health, contributing to respiratory diseases and exacerbating conditions like asthma and bronchitis, while uncollected trash and rampant litter can attract vectors for diseases and viruses. In the ranking, over 300 major cities are scored on four main categories of pollution, infrastructure, living conditions, and resident dissatisfaction. Some metrics included in the score calculations include: air quality index, greenhouse gas emissions per capita, water quality violations, quantity of waste in landfills per capita, population density, and share of overcrowded rooms.”
