Nashville lawmaker continues push for tax relief
Nashville Rep. Aftyn Behn filed the second bill for the 2025 General Assembly, legislation that would end the state’s tax on groceries. The state currently places a 4% tax on groceries and local governments may add up to 2.75%. The tax significantly increases costs for Tennessee families.
HB2 would end the grocery tax and take steps to ensure local governments are made whole due to the revenue lost from eliminating this tax.
Behn has previously stated that corporate tax loopholes could be closed to make up for any lost revenue from the proposal:
“Instead of focusing on a bipartisan solution to inflation, Gov. Lee announced he’s giving corporations yet another tax break despite wide support for eliminating the grocery tax. It’s time to shift the tax burden off of us and onto mega-corporations who don’t pay what they owe.”
Behn noted that tax policy is about choices and urged lawmakers to choose families over corporations:
“Instead of providing tax relief to working families, the Republican Party chose to give billions in tax breaks to property-rich corporations,” she said.
