A new rental inspection program kicks off this month in Los Angeles County.
Under the Rental Housing Habitability Program, which was approved by the Board of Supervisors in April, the county health department will perform mandatory inspections on rental units in unincorporated areas every four years.
Oscar Zarate with the tenant rights group Strategic Actions for a Just Economy told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian the program addresses long-standing issues with unsafe living conditions, particularly in low-income communities in East and South L.A. where the housing stock is older.
“People wait months for a response from the Department of Public Health, and at the end of the day see very little compliance,” he said. “So through this new program and the new tools that will be at the disposal of inspectors, we hope to see faster response times and more compliance.”
