City of Huntsville GIS Department adds web app to help locate Veteran grave sites

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The City of Huntsville GIS Department has added an app to its website that allows people to find a veteran’s gravesite.

Maple Hill Cemetery in Five Points holds the graves of hundreds of military personnel, from as far back as the Revolutionary War to as recent as Iraq and Afghanistan.

An app created by the city’s GIS department now allows people to locate any veterans intered at the cemetery. Tara Slao, City Director of Cemeteries, said the City had no way of knowing how many flags or wreaths to purchase, let alone how to find veterans’ graves.

“We appreciate the hard work of the City’s GIS Department on this application to ensure veterans are honored,” Sloan said. “Out of the estimated 80,000 to 100,000 individuals buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, they identified 2,220 veterans.”

In the summer of 2024, Will Ford, an intern from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, was tasked with this job.
