AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – A ribbon cutting was held on Friday for the first homes built in the “Tenured Educators Affordable Community Housing” program (T.E.A.C.H. Initiative).
The project was organized by former substitute teacher Jeremy Johnson. The goal is to bring more affordable housing for teachers and create incentives for more people to get into the profession.
“We intentionally looked at the school board salaries,” said Jeremy Johnson of Vetted Investments. “And so over 80% of the current Richmond County Board of Education employees will qualify for this house, this home. These homes are only being priced at 225, which is, if you know about the Augusta market, is a steal of a deal. New construction, three bedroom, two and a half bath home for only 225, intentionally priced in at a point that teachers can afford on their current salaries.”
As of now, four homes are available for teachers in the county to move in.
“Though, with having a program like this, it relieves that financial stress that they have of trying to house their family, their own children,” said Katerra Godbee, an attendee of the celebration.
