Millburn Police Detective Helps Shut Down Luxury Car Theft Ring in NJ, NY & Other States

NEWARK, NJ – US Attorney Philip R. Sellinger recently announced that eight men have been charged for their alleged roles in a conspiracy to steal luxury cars in New Jersey, New York and elsewhere, and transport them across state lines.

According to Millburn Police Captain Mark Azzopardi, “Detective Matthew Wichelns was on loan to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office to help combat the large amount of luxury vehicles stolen in Millburn over the past several years.” He continued, “Detective Wichelns played a significant role in the investigation of a series of high-end car thefts that began in November 2021. For the next couple of years, he was heavily involved in the case, contributing to key aspects of the investigation.”

Azzopardi also spoke of Wichelns’ expertise and efforts being crucial in tracking down those responsible for the thefts, which involved sophisticated methods and required close coordination across various law enforcement agencies.
