Prescribed pile burns begin at Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station

(PETERSON SPACE FORCE, Colo.) — The Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station (CMSFS) fire department will conduct prescribed pile burns starting Friday morning, Nov. 8.

The burn will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. and last until 6 p.m. Crews will be back on Saturday, Nov. 9 to complete the burn at the same times as the day before.

El Paso County Sheriff removes fire restrictions

The burn’s purpose is to reduce the overall vegetative fuel load within native areas and improve forest health and resiliency.

The potential to see slight smoke may be visible, however, individuals should not be alarmed or call 911 to report a fire. No piles will be ignited after 2 p.m. but smoke and flames may be visible for 24-48 hours after ignition.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, El Paso County Sheriff and Fire Warden Joseph Roybal lifted Stage I fire restrictions following an assessment of fuel and weather conditions.

All safety protocols are in place and the burns will be performed in a controlled environment.
