RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Halloween has come and gone, and as the leftover pumpkins rot, community members had the option to get rid of unwanted gourds at the Pumpkin Smash at Stony Point Fashion Park on Saturday.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, people brought their ready-to-smash pumpkins to Stony Point Fashion Park where they could drop, stomp and smash to their heart’s content. The pulverized pumpkin remains were then used for composting efforts by Enrich Compost.

There were other activities for people to enjoy as well, including face painting, fall-themed photo opportunities and fall-themed food.

8News spoke with Alexis Cheeseman — Marketing and Community Engagement Associate for Stony Point Fashion Park — about the wide variety of things available to participants at the event.

“We have different vendors, like face painting and balloon art, we also have crafts by Richmond Public Library, and we also have Central Virginia Waste Management Authority doing a table with quick green tips and other giveaways,” Cheeseman said.
