Oriental fruit fly outbreak in Orange County forces quarantine

Officials have called for a quarantine in part of Orange County after an outbreak of an invasive pest.

The oriental fruit fly, an invasive species that lays eggs inside of fruit — making them “unfit for consumption” — have been detected in and around Santa Ana and Garden Grove, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture .

The quarantine zone stretches about 87 square miles. It is bordered on the north by Anaheim; on the south by John Wayne Airport; on the west by Huntington Beach; and on the east by the 55 freeway.

Those within the zone are being urged to keep their homegrown fruit on the property. They are allowed to be consumed, as long as it’s on the property it was grown, the CDFA said.
