Flooding along Edisto River closes roads, prompts evacuations

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Flooding continues Monday morning along the Edisto River.

“Do not attempt to drive through flood waters,” the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office said while warning that several roads were becoming impassable due to rising water.

Residents who live in flood zones are encouraged to evacuate. An emergency shelter was opened Sunday at the Colleton County Recreation Center at 208 Recreation Lane. Officials say pets are welcome.

The sheriff’s office said it has personnel ready to help anyone who needs assistance leaving their homes.

Residents evacuated near Whetstone Crossroads

A flood warning issued by the National Weather Service in Charleston is in effect until further notice. According to forecasters, the flood stage is 10.0 feet, and major flooding occurs at 15.0 feet.

Flood stage along the Edisto River was at 7.9 feet on Sunday night, with the river expected to rise above flood stage early Monday morning before eventually cresting at 15.5 feet Tuesday morning.
