‘Songs of Survivors’ gives Louisiana Veterans a voice

COVINGTON, La. ( WGNO ) — It’s at American Legion Post 16 in Covington.

That’s where WGNO Good Morning New Orleans features reporter Bill Wood is in the audience.

With a career in country music and a long list of records, David St. Romain steps up to the music he’s now making.

And the folks who inspire him to make it.

For a few hours, in a congregation of heroes, the guy with the guitar searches for his sermon.

It’s what St. Romain has created, a Songwriting Workshop for Veterans where he is sometimes the audience.

He listens to their stories, hearing from soldiers, sailors, Marines and Airmen.

“Every decade, every experience, every war,” said St. Romain.

In the recording studio, St. Romain transforms real life into lyrics.

The music man is himself a veteran.

He served in the Louisiana National Guard for eight years.

From Marine Corps combat to commanding a kitchen, a popular chef recounts the journey

Now he serves his state and country by collecting what he calls Songs of Survivors.
