Following Tropical Storm Helene, debris was picked up on almost every street corner in Anderson County. Now, that debris is being turned into mulch and will be available for free to Anderson County residents.
In October 2024, the Starr Landfill received 7,112 tons of storm debris, while Ashbritt has picked up over 30,500 cubic yards of storm debris in Anderson County.
Ingram Palacios, project manager for Rancho Tree Service, which AshBritt has contracted, noted that the Upstate area has a lot of green land and dense regions, which resulted in many uprooted trees. These conditions contributed significantly to the volume of debris collected in the storm’s aftermath.
The Starr Landfill is providing free mulch to Anderson County residents. However, residents are required to load their vehicles with the mulch. To ensure its effectiveness and safety, mulch should be left to set for six months before being applied to plants and trees.
The Starr Landfill is at 390 Roy Arnold Road in Starr. Its hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m. until noon. If you have questions, contact the Anderson County Solid Waste Department at 864-260-1001.
